Mother's Day Prize Ribbon - DIY

Here is a quick gift for mom to wear to her Mother's Day Celebration...out of a coffee filter!

By dying the natural filter in red food coloring, I was able to layer up a prize ribbon, by adding a few embellishments.

STEPS TO CREATE THE "FLOWER"

First, flatten then soak the filters in red food coloring (some more than others)
I created the "flower" portion of my ribbon my layering one flat dark pink, one lighter pink with curled edges, one natural flower created with a running stitch and decorative running stitch border.
Next layer is a yo-yo with the folds outward and finally a centre button with the folds facing inward.
Sew all the layers together when you add the button.

Once I created the flower I added a special banner for mom.  To create the hanging ribbon portion I used strips of tissue and some hot pink fringe I had hanging around(lower left)
the tissue ribbon was cut in a dove tail (lower right)

I used a brooch backing in cardboard to the back of the assembly but you could just as easily use a safety pin.

I basically used the model of prize ribbons I have made for my etsy shop and the one I created in a detailed tutorial for amy power's inspired ideas birthday issue.

It's a fun last minute project to add a little something special to maybe a brunch or tea and you could customize it for a birthday or bridal shower.

I'll see if the girls let me wear it this Sunday ...  I'll probably embarrass them ... as usual

Wrap it up Thursday - Packaging a gift with a gift

For someone really special ... someone that will really appreciate it ... it's nice to top off a gift with another gift.  Sort of a 2 for 1 special.  Felt flowers, a brooch and even an elaborate pom pom can later be used as hair adornments or a brooch for a scarf or coat.

1.  These felt flowers can be found at home made simple.  2.  I love these felt flowers and the tutorial can be found at blue cricket design  3.  This wrapping is actually three in one including a shirt.  It was shown in Country Living and designed by Jenn Playford of Wrapagami.  4.  My friend Tiffany Pratt of Glitter Pie makes these gorgeous pom poms that would look adorable attached to a hair elastic.

I decided to take a special book for a friend and wrap it up with another present.

I wrapped the present in hot pink and softened it with another wrapping of parchment paper.  Tied up with vintage ribbon and twine, I added a linen prize ribbon.

This prize ribbon topper is a hint at my project for Amy Power's Holiday Issue of Inspired Ideas.  It should be available the end of this week or early next week.

 I guess that "tops" :) off this week's wrap-up...

Happy Birthday

Today would  be my mom's 70th birthday.  I lost her almost 4 years ago to a very unexpected aneurysm.  Her birthday falls on Canadian Thanksgiving and she was always hosting a family dinner.  She was always ripped off when it came to a special celebration just for her.  This is a birthday ribbon I made for Amy Power's Inspired Ideas magazine - birthday issue, inspired by her.  I think she would have liked it.

I miss her everyday.  She was my best friend.  I don't know what she would have thought about turning 70.  Probably not much.  And I think she would have begged us not to have a party - but I am pretty sure we would have done something special to honor her today.  I am an only child - so we are just having my dad over tonight and we will have a nice dinner with her favorite cake.

This is a picture from about 5 or 6 years ago from her favorite place - her home in The Florida Keys.  She was so excited because she had just finished setting up a new place right on the ocean.  It is really stunning and when I am there - I feel her all around me.

The following is a quote Holly used on decor8 the other day and I think it really resonates with me when I think of my mom here on the beach outside our door...

“The tide recedes, but leaves behind bright seashells on the sand. The sun goes down, but gentle warmth still lingers on the land. The music stops, yet echoes on in sweet, soulful refrains. For every joy that passes, something beautiful remains.” – unknown.

New Prize Ribbons

I've finally been able to put together a few more prize ribbons for my etsy shop.  It's been awhile and I almost forgot how to do it!

I realized they make look kind of cool in a shadow box - especially if you wanted to give it to a guy.  Not many guys are going to wear a linen prize ribbon!

I like the way this one turned out. It is nice and soft and reminds be of life on the seashore!

I'm heading to The Creative Connection on Thursday so I have been working on a different way to give out a business card.  These took forever so I will only have a dozen or so like this.  Unless I find the time in the next day or so.

I need to add a blog tag and then I think I will be done.  I would like to make more but it is so time consuming - more so than the original size.  I don't have much time before I go ... I'm busy working on mother's guilt

Mini Prize Ribbons

I have been locked up here in one room pretty much.  Fetching water, mashed potato and apple sauce -  because of this.  I have been trying come up with an interesting way to introduce my business card to someone.  Make it fun, crafty and different.  I am trying out a mini version of my prize ribbon.  Keep you posted :)
